Living with cancer in Asia

With changes in the disease structure, we are seeing a transition away from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases, and accordingly the number of cases of cancer in Asia is rising rapidly. Cancer is closely related not only to genetic factors, but is also intricately linked to the living environment and lifestyles and therefore the impact of the cultures of different regions on cancer can vary greatly.

We are engaged in research to identify differences in prevalence and mortality and also factors for changes in these figures, focusing on cancers such as prostate and breast cancer for which there are major epidemiological differences between Asian and western countries. In addition to gaining knowledge from analysis of the latest medical data available, our aim is also to consider cancer control measures that are best-suited to the people of Asia, taking into due account the sociocultural background as it relates to cancer treatment in Asia.
